Chapter 8:

Sex and Intimacy

Come take control, just grab a hold

Of my body and mind, soon we’ll be making it, honey

I’ll be feeling fine

You’re my medicine, open up and let me in

Darling, you’re so great, I can’t wait for you to operate

…When I get this feeling

I need sexual healing

–Marvin Gay in his album Sexual Healing

“Your lips are like a scarlet thread, and your mouth is lovely…your neck is like the tower of David…your two breasts are like two fawns…I will go away to the mountain of myrrh and the hill of frankincense. You are altogether beautiful, my love; there is no flaw in you.” – Songs of Solomon 4:3-7

“Sex is one of the greatest adventures in a relationship. It makes us feel alive. It can connect our bodies, brains, and hearts. In fact, sexual and emotional intimacy are intertwined; we need both to be happy. With too little eroticism-our relationship is dull and with too little emotional connection – sex is mechanical.” – Laurie Watson, PhD, LMFT, Certified Sex Therapist

“They have nude beaches,” my teammate told me as we boarded a plane for Europe. I was fourteen years old and on a select soccer team about to play two tournaments in Denmark and Sweden. We would also travel to numerous other countries for sightseeing.

Little did I know I was going to learn about more than a foreign country; I was going to learn about the foreign land of the female body and sexual encounters. I was one of the youngest guys on the trip, surrounded by guys as old as nineteen. They knew far more than me about women, and they had hormones surging at a much higher rate. We were all excited about soccer, but the promise of nude beaches consumed us.

In Amsterdam, I followed along with the older guys. We dropped our bags at the hotel and headed directly to the beach. We didn’t even change clothes. We took our shoes off, rolled up our jeans, and began our search for naked European women. We were disappointed immediately. The beach was empty. We picked up our pace and kept scanning. Our first encounter was less than desirable: We ran into some old people, then more old people, then more. Ugh, it was awful. Our dreams were shattered. Where are all the beautiful European women we had been told about? Then we spotted some.

Two girls were lying topless and the right side up. We did it. We found them.

But now what? The older guys engaged them in conversation. I was clearly just a young kid tagging along. These exotic half-naked women walked with us to town and stayed topless for the journey on the beach. It wasn’t until we reached the edge of town that they covered up. We eventually had to go, but a dream had come to reality that day, and it was only the beginning.

We were exhausted from travel the first day, but the next night we had plenty of energy to explore Amsterdam.
